In the evening of January 26, Luke Lin, a senior research analyst at Taiwan research firm Digitimes Research, said today that Apple is currently developing four new-generation iPhones.
The four iPhones are the 5.7-inch to 5.8-inch LCD version of the iPhone, the 6.0-inch to 6.1-inch LCD version of the iPhone, the 6.0-inch to 6.1-inch OLED version of the iPhone and the 6.4-inch to 6.5-inch OLED version of the iPhone.
Although four iPhones are in development, Luke Lin said Apple will eventually launch only three products: two LCD versions of the iPhone and one 6.4-inch to 6.5-inch OLED version of the iPhone. This means that 6.0-inch to 6.1-inch OLED version of the iPhone will eventually be canceled.
Luke Lin said that Apple initially planned to launch two OLED version of iPhone, but recently decided to adopt two LCD version of iPhone and 6.4 inches to 6.5 inches OLED version of the iPhone portfolio. This is also in line with Apple's current iPhone portfolio: two LCD versions (iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus) and one OLED version (iPhone X).
Luke Lin also stressed that at present, Apple has not made the final decision, so the formal product mix may change in the future. Luke Lin also said that the development of these four iPhone are supported by wireless charging and 3D sensing capabilities.
In addition, for the entry-level product iPhone SE, Luke Lin said Apple will introduce the new iPhone SE this year, supports wireless charging, but does not support 3D sensing. The new iPhone SE will be mass-produced in the second quarter of this year and is expected to be launched in May or June this year.
Luke Lin's forecast and the well-known Apple analyst, KGI Securities analyst Guo Mingfu slightly different projections. Guo Ming-tao had previously said that Apple will introduce two OLED versions of iPhone (5.8 inches and 6.5 inches) and one LCD version of iPhone (6.1 inches) this year.
Recently there is news that Samsung consider to stop expanding the production scale of the OLED screen. Some people think that Samsung will reconsider the expansion plan of its OLED manufacturing plant because the demand of the global smart phone market still has certain uncertainties.
Currently in the mainstream mobile phone manufacturers, in addition to the two giants Samsung and Apple, the other manufacturers enthusiasm for the OLED screen is not high, the reason is nothing more than two points, first, Samsung has a huge monopoly in the OLED screen advantage is not conducive to fair Competition, the second is to have such a warning HTC, all manufacturers have their own ideas.
Taiwan Media also pointed out that Apple first adopted OLED panel last year, not only led the launch of various brands of OLED mobile phones, but also set off a tide of OLED panel expansion. Samsung has expanded its A3 plant to produce 150,000 units a month. By the end of 2016, it will shut down a 7th generation plant and vacated the plant to build an A4 plant. The estimated monthly production capacity will be about 60,000 units and 20 million to 30 million units will be produced Mobile phone panel, the new plant is scheduled for mass production in the second half of this year. In addition, Samsung plans a new plant A5, with a total capacity of 180,000 to 270,000, and will be the largest OLED panel plant in the world.
Mainland panel plant expansion is quite positive. BOE B7 factory in Chengdu and B11 factory in Mianyang are 6 generations of flexible OLED panel production line, total monthly capacity of 9.6 million. Huaxing Photoelectric Co., Ltd. is located in Wuhan T4 plant is a monthly production capacity of 4.5 million 6-generation flexible OLED panel production line.
Although Apple, Samsung and other mobile phone makers this year have pushed the new OLED screen planning, OLED panel demand growth, but capacity growth even greater. In particular, flexible OLED panel prices remain high, iPhoneX because the price is too high, buy less than expected, so Apple will continue to launch this year, LCD panel phone. And the smart phone market has matured, the market is no longer high growth, the future is to eat such a large OLED panel capacity, forming a big question mark.
